Description
This map purports to tell the story of America’s frontiers from the time of Columbus to the mid-19th century. It uses a number of stylized figures, some of which are labeled in the accompanying legend, and a series of nondescript lines to express various stages in the country’s development. Though Native American peoples are not omitted entirely, only European and American explorers are noted in the key.
It’s difficult to ascertain much educational value from the ambiguous lines and apparently random assortment of images, but the map was indeed created as a teaching tool. “Prepared for use in history, geography, and social science classes of the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades” by the School Health Service division of the Quaker Oats Company.
