Description

This lively pictorial map of the United States was illustrated by Johan Bull and published in a 1939 edition of LIFE Magazine. The image emphasizes the historic growth of the United States dating back to Columbus’ arrival in 1492, though the first European wouldn’t arrive on what would become American soil until 1513 (Ponce de Leon’s arrival to Florida).

Dozens of vignettes highlight notable events, important ‘firsts’, and relevant trends. Major avenues of travel, such as the Cumberland Road, Oregon Trail, and the path of Lewis and Clark are shown boldly in blue.
