Description
This detailed steel engraved map is focused on the Western Hemisphere but includes portions of Europe, Africa, and several islands in the South Pacific. The continents of North and South America are titled collectively as a single unit, nomenclature that would become less popular as regional identities and national pride took root.
Territorial claims are dominated largely by the Spanish (yellow), Portuguese (red), and British (also red), while the United States is shown in green, yet to incorporate the vast lands of the Louisiana Purchase. Published in London by Charles Smith in 1808.
