Description
Echos of the British Empire can be found in this 1903 advertisement for Oldsmobiles, published in Collier’s Weekly. An exotic variety of individuals representing every corner of the globe stands behind the vehicle, looking on in admiration. Text at the bottom reads;
“The sun never sets on the world-standard Runabout – “The Best Thing on Wheels.””
The Runabout was also known as the Model R, or the Curved Dash Oldsmobile, and is considered to be the first mass-produced automobile (built on an assembly line using interchangeable parts), predating the Model T (1908) by seven years. Its affordability (only $650) and reliability made the Model R the best-selling automobile in America from 1902 – 1905.
