Marketing map of Alaska made for advertisers, by advertisers.

Interesting map and book published by Benton & Bowels (formerly one of the oldest advertising agencies in the United States) immediately after Alaska was granted statehood in 1958. Both the map and corresponding booklet were designed to highlight the economic and industrial potential the new state and to guide the firm’s analysis “for marketing men.” Financial projections are included and are “based on plausible but obviously unverifiable assumptions.” The map itself is highly stylized and filled with empty space, representative of the extensive unknown frontier in Alaska at the time.
