Description

This somewhat incongruous piece of domestic WWII advertising was issued in 1943 by the Advertisers’ Service Division of New York. Turning the central dial changes the aircraft model illuminated by the spotlight on the ground.

Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan) planes are shown on one side, while Allied (U.S., Great Britain, China, and Russia) are identified on the verso. While the ability to distinguish between enemy and friendly aircraft was a critical skill while in the theater of war, it was probably less useful on the homefront.
