Description
Prior to 1923, there were no commercial aviation maps or charts published for flyers in the United States. That year, the U.S. Army Airways Section instructed the Chief of Engineers to begin producing a series of strip maps for use in aerial navigation at a scale of 1:500,000.
This example, revised to 1924, shows the path between Dallas and San Antonio, Texas, including Austin, Waco, and Fort Worth. Routes with compass and magnetic courses are shown, along with landing facilities outlined in the accompanying legend. The side of the page includes inset diagrams of local airports, with numerous blank entries to accommodate future construction.

Condition Description: 7 segments, affixed to old linen, quite soiled. Heavy damp staining visible on the left side and the sheet has toned and curled around the outer edges. The bottom edge of the top segment shows significant wear, and there's some light abrasion to the sheet in the upper left. The bottom segment would have had a key, but it's been trimmed, possibly to accommodate an easier fold.
