Description

This idyllic view of today’s Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park straddling Montana and Alberta was published around 1936 by the McGill Warner Company of St. Paul on behalf of the Great Northern Railway. ‘The Empire Builder’ route can be seen in black running along the bottom of the page, highlighting convenient accessibility to the scenic region.

A colorful pictorial topographic map provides the base image, upon which are labeled mountain ranges, chalets, hotels, glaciers, and other geographic features. Automobile roads and hiking trails are shown in bright red and a table of distances between points of interest is provided at the bottom of the page.

The verso provides additional information on ‘The Land of Shining Mountains’, including tour itineraries and rates, tourist amenities, and more. Of particular interest is the photograph of “Blackfeet Indians entertaining at Glacier Park Hotel.” The manager would pay members of various tribes to erect teepees on site, offering a more ‘authentic’ experience for predominantly white customers.
