Description

Step back in time to the glitz and glamour of 1930s Hollywood with this enchanting pictorial map, a vibrant snapshot of an era defined by the Golden Age of Cinema. As the Great Depression cast its shadow over the nation and war loomed in Europe, the film industry emerged as a beacon of escapism and Hollywood became the epicenter of American dreams.

Such enthusiasm is reflected on this lively map, illustrated by John Groth and published in 1937 in Stage Magazine. Crowds flock to glamorous stars near the Carthay Circle Theater and packed tour buses cruise by local sites like the Hollywood Bowl, Bel Air Beach Club, and the ‘Home of Mickey.’ Numerous hotels, clubs, and production studios are also labeled, offering a historic look at a bygone Los Angeles. According to an article on the map by Atlas Obsucra,

“Chicago native Groth (1908–1988) was a cartoonist who became art director of Esquire in his 20s. He would go on to have a brilliant career as a war artist for the Chicago Sun. In 1944, he rode the first Allied jeep into newly liberated Paris. If he’d been any closer to the front, “he would have had to have sat in the Kraut’s lap,” joked Ernest Hemingway.”
