A Sketch Map of Billings in the Mountain Country

Billings, Montana – “Commercial Center of the Midland Empire, formerly the Crow Country.”

This eye-catching map shows a large area centered on Billings, Montana. Forest areas and mountain ranges are shown with a soft green hue while the primary transportation routes are boldly depicted in red. Symbols noting various locations of interest are outlined according to the legend in the lower right – dude ranches, hot springs, and campgrounds are just a few examples. Additional small vignettes and annotations identify fossil beds, fishing spots, historic sites, and much more.

The verso presents a stylized map of the region, with Billings situated conveniently in the center of Fort Peck Dam, the Black Hills, Yellowstone Park, and Glacier Park. Several photographs showcase the natural beauty of Montana and Wyoming. Accompanying text recognizes the prior ownership of indigenous tribes, namely the Crow, but in a way indicative of contemporary attitudes. A quote by a fictional chief, Arapooish, on the beauty of the (former) Crow Country is followed by praise for the modernity of the white man.

“Today, the ‘paleface’ successors to the Indians and their visitors from distant plains during the summer time find enjoyment, too, in the mountains of the Crow Country, with pleasures of the trip enhanced by travel over standard-width, paved highways suitable to the modern, speedy motor cars.”

The map was compiled and traced by E.V.W. in 1938. Engraving by the Western Newspaper Union, printing by Gazette Printing Company, and publishing by the Billings Commercial Club – all located in Billings, Montana.
