Description

This uncommon and amusing pictorial map provides a whimsical overview of the campus of Rutgers University, located in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Oriented with northeast at the top, the image presents a top-down street plan with illustrations of primary buildings and facilities in profile.

Annotations offer a contemporary student’s perspective while various features add elements of humor. Interesting examples include the Silent Policemen (one of New Brunswick’s finest), the campus cop (also silent), and an open-air swimming pool (a bucket).

The hilarious map was drawn in 1930 by class of 1931 student F. Kermit Herdling. Herdling was named editor-in-chief of the Chanticleer, a humor magazine published on campus. Scarce and unlisted in OCLC. One example has been identified at Rutgers University Library.
