Description
After nearly a quarter of the city was burned by retreating Confederates during the Civil War, Richmond, Virginia underwent a period of significant growth and development in the late 1800s and first half of the 19th century. This pictorial map, drawn by W.M. Lewis and dated 1937, highlights much of the recent revitalization along the banks of the James River.
Primary transportation routes, historic sites, and other locations of interest are illustrated and individually labeled within the image. Parks, cemeteries (segregated), and other outdoor spaces are highlighted in green and include small vignettes detailing their use, such as the tuberculosis hospital at Pine Camp.
