Description

This attractive engraved folio map shows the northeastern coast of Canada; including the shorelines of New Brunswick and Labrador, as well as the island of Newfoundland. Interior details are relatively limited with the exception of water features, but numerous place names can be found along the ample coastlines in the region.

The emphasis on maritime accessibility is also supported by the inclusion of several sand banks in the north Atlantic. These shallow underwater plateaus are home to some of the most historically bountiful fishing grounds on the planet.

When France lost its American possessions as a result of the Seven Years’ War, the islands of Miquelon and St. Pierre (St. Peters on the map) were returned to the French to allow them to maintain local fishing rights and a base for preserving their catch. The islands are still organized as an overseas territory of France today, though Canada closed domestic fishing in the Grand Banks in 1992.
