Description

This dual image shows portions of northern Greece as it existed in ancient times. The upper portion shows the city of Byzantium and the Black Sea to the western border of Thrace. The lower image continues further west, focusing on the territory of Macedonia (home of Alexander the Great) to the coast of the Adriatic Sea.

Major cities are shown and individually labeled, while a legend identifies symbols for mountains, islands, rivers, provinces, cities, seas and coastal points. Competing theories over the conversion between ancient measurements and modern English miles are highlighed in the scale.

The map was issued by Edward Wells in A new sett of maps both of antient and present geography. This atlas contained 41 double page maps, most of which were issued in two forms to compare the ancient and present geography of various regions across the globe. The atlas was dedicated to William, Duke of Gloucester, a former pupil of Well’s at Oxford who died in 1700 at the age of eleven.
