Description

This beautiful copperplate engraved map of North and South America, plus large portions of Europe and Africa, was published in London by John Cary in 1806. While Napoleon’s troops were rampaging across Europe, the fledgling United States maintained its foothold against the European colonizers of Spain, Britain, and Portugal. France had sold the vast Louisiana territory just a few years prior to publication and retained only a few islands in the Caribbean.

Bright hand color delineates many of these colonial boundaries – notably the possession of West Florida by the United States, New Spain, and favorable British Claims in the Oregon Territory. A fascinating variety of settlements, landmarks, and geographic features are labeled throughout the image, incorporating information obtained by the explorations of Captain Cook, Lewis & Clark, Alexander MacKenzie, and many others.
