Description

This important map of the British province of Virginia was published by John Hinton in London as part of a 1779 edition of the Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure. Issued to a broad audience near the height of the American Revolution, the image offers a detailed overview of the militarily and economically vital territory (note the sheaf of wheat in the title cartouche).

A variety of settlements ranging from small villages to large coastal cities are labeled. Geographic features are also named, with a particular emphasis on coastal landmarks, rivers, and mountains. For the last, topography is depicted pictorially and numerous peaks and ranges are identified. The Great Dismal Swamp can be seen on the border with North Carolina and a dated boundary line with Maryland is noted opposite Chesapeake Bay.
