A Map of the Worcester Area as defined for the production of Wines of Origin

German settlers planted the first vineyards in Worcester shortly after they arrived in the 19th century, and it’s been an important wine-producing region ever since, comprising almost a quarter of South Africa’s production. The area is particularly warm, but is protected by extreme weather by mountain ranges on either side, seen on this map in topographical relief.

The map also shows nearly half of the region under viticulture, shaded in green, along with the locations of wine co-operatives, villages and roads. Decorative elements such as building profiles, a vine cartouche, compass rose and coat of arms complete the view, which was drawn by Janice Ashley of Design Studios in 1973. Text on the verso of the map provides additional information on the climate, geology, and viticulture of the region.
