Description

This map of the United States shows the country’s territorial expansion through the end of the Civil War; highlighting signification acquisitions and changes made between 1845 and 1866. Small vignettes within the map reflect events and features from the mid-1800’s, and lean heavily towards conflict in the Civil War and between Native Americans and white settlers. Text explaining the illustrations is also provided in many cases. Lists of outstanding military events and naval engagements of the Civil War are shown in the lower left, adjacent to the decorative compass rose and distance scale.

The map was drawn by Karl Smith and published by Linweave as promotional material for its paper products. Further advertising can be seen in the lower right, which indicates “this map is lithographed on Linweave Capri, Natural White, 70 lb. Basis.”
