Description
This is an attractive pictorial map of Indiana depicting the state’s multitude of historical events, locations, and points of interest. An early depiction of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Lincoln’s boyhood home, and important battle scenes are pictured alongside forts, riverboats, and towns. Colorful vignettes showcase natural features, transportation options, and park highlights. Territorial responsibilities of the Indiana Department of Conservation are underscored throughout.
Accompanying text provides contextual information alongside the illustrations, with emphasis on dated events and historic sites. The decorative title cartouche reflects on the strong Native American presence prior to white settlement. According to the University of Indiana;
“At first glance this [map] seems to be primarily a celebration of Indiana’s hardy pioneer generation and its accomplishments. But a close-up look reveals much, much more: This a celebration of Hoosier culture and history, an attempt to tell a more inclusive story of Indiana’s past, a broadened history that locates the principal Underground Railroad route in Indiana as well as the birthplace of James Whitcomb Riley, the “Hoosier Poet.” Larger than live figures from Indiana folklore like Jonny Appleseed get their due, as well as the state’s inventors, literary figures, early interurban lines, first electrically lighted towns, natural gas deposits, as well as the Hoosier state’s limestone industry.”
The map was originally designed by Lee Carter and published by the Indiana Department of Conservation in 1932. This is the third edition, printed in 1959 in Indianapolis by the Success Printing and Lithographing Company.
