Description

This captivating map shows the city of Cleveland as it was at the time of incorporation in 1836, and includes a number of vignettes detailing historical aspects like the stage road to Detroit, early churches, and ships along the Lake Erie shore. Accompanying annotations provide interesting information on the Forest City’s past, including former population, transportation routes, architectural landmarks, and geographic coordinates.

Ohio City, originally a separate town that was incorporated around the same time, was annexed by Cleveland in 1854 and is considered one of the cities oldest neighborhoods. Further information on the development of Cleveland can be found at the bottom of the sheet.

The artist, Arthur Suchy, was born in Cleveland in 1898 and produced a number of pictorial maps during his career, in addition to other works.
