Description

The Battle of Lobositz (or Lowositz) was fought between the Prussian army of Frederick the Great and the Austrian army of Maximilian Ulysses Browne on October 1, 1756, near Leitmeritz in the modern day Czech Republic. The result was a Prussian defeat, forcing Frederick to turn away from his invasion of Bohemia and retreat into Saxony.

This map, published in London’s Gentleman’s Magazine just a few months after the engagement, shows a battle plan and a map of the broader regional conflict. Within the latter, the transportation network of rivers and roads is emphasized, with distances noted between numerous points. A table in the lower left provides further mileage – helpful information for the armchair generals in Britain who were interested in how the war progressed for their Prussian allies.
