A Map of Atlantic City

“The Editors of TODAY present this guide to add to your convention pleasure”

This large-scale street plan of Atlantic City was created and published around 1950 by the General Drafting Company of Convent Station, New Jersey. The firm issued a bonanza of postwar promotional material, often in conjunction with the Standard Oil Company and its affiliates. TODAY was one of General Drafting’s broad travel publications – a four-page color circular focusing on tourism and banking at the state level. This map was created as a promotional piece for an advertising convention in Atlantic City.

The image focuses on the area adjacent to the Boardwalk, calling out Chalfonte-Haddon Hall as the Convention Headquarters. Numerous other hotels are highlighted in pink, including the Traymore, Blenheim, Claridge, and the Ritz-Carlton (apparently not yet converted into apartments). Churches and synagogues are also labeled, plus several other important local buildings (transportation depots, City Hall, etc.). Text on the verso offers additional tourist information about Atlantic City and a brief blurb about TODAY.
