A Hysterical Map of the Jackson Hole Country and Grand Teton National Park

A ‘slightly cockeyed’ postwar pictorial map of Grand Teton National Park and the surrounding area.

This eye-catching pictorial map of Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park, and the surrounding area was illustrated by the talented cartoonist Jolly Lindgren and published in 1948 by the Lindgren Brothers of Spokane. The region’s striking topography is immediately evident, with the Grand Teton, adjacent to Jenny Lake, towering over all other peaks. Other notable geographic features include Jackson Lake, the Red Mountains (literally), and the Snake River.

Vibrant primary colors identify primary transportation routes (red), bodies of water (blue), and the Wyoming countryside (yellow). Tourist attractions like dude ranches, animal habitats, hunting lodges, and campsites are also shown. A minimalist legend in the lower right is indicative of the lighthearted content – the image is rife with cheeky wildlife, amusing commentary, and silly puns.

Jolly Lindgren (1907–1991) was a Spokane, Washington–based artist and eccentric humorist best known for his “Hysterical Maps,” a series of cartoon-style tourist maps produced from the late 1930s through the 1950s. Operating through his company, Lindgren Bros., he created dozens of regional maps—often sold in gift shops and gas stations—that blended accurate geographic detail with whimsical illustrations, corny jokes, and playful exaggerations of local lore.

The Jackson Hole map was issued in at least four different variants, though all are uncommon on the market today. The 1948 edition is notable as it shortly precedes the intense land use/conservation debate surrounding the expansion of Grand Teton National Park in 1950.
