A Hobbit’s View of the Haight Ashbury

Street map of San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood published during the Summer of Love.

This funkadelic poster map was created by the talented neighborhood artist Nathan Terre and published in San Francisco by Ex Pressions in 1967. It was designed to promote Middle Earth Clothing Company, a garment retailer in the Haight-Ashbury District.

Several square blocks of the iconic neighborhood, a center of the counterculture movement during the 1960s, are sketchily illustrated. Numerous establishments are labeled, including Straight Theater, God’s Eye Ice Cream Shop, Happiness Unlimited, and the Psychedelic Shop.

Decorative elements include odd landscapes, plants, and animals – “direct allusions to Barbara Remington’s cover art for the first authorized paperback edition of The Lord of the Rings.” Appropriate inclusions for advertising a store named after Tolkien’s iconic world.
