Description
This charming guide to the Morton Arboretum was drawn by well-known landscape artist Anthony Tyznik and published by Rand McNally in 1967. It offers an easy-to-read overview of the expansive grounds (about 1,400 acres at the time) located about 25 miles west of Chicago. Described on the verso as, “an outdoor museum of living woody plants (trees, shrubs and vines) founded in 1922 by Joy Morton, eldest son of J. Sterling Morton, originator of Arbor Day.”
Various roads, walking trails, and geographic features are noted according to the legend in the upper left. Basic rules are also listed. The image identifies visitor amenities, the location of specific plant life, and various land uses. Decorative arboreal elements adorn the compass rose in the upper right.
