A Century of Progress 1934

A sweeping view of the second year of the Century of Progress.

The central theme for the Century of Progress, held in 1933 along Chicago’s lakefront in conjunction with the city’s centenary, was technological innovation. The motto “Science Finds, Industry Applies, Man Adapts” is reflected in the futuristic architecture seen on this beautiful panorama of the fairgrounds. Innovative attractions like the Sky Ride, Enchanted Isle, and the Swift Bridge provided thrilling amusements.

The latest in science and exploration could be discovered at Adler Planetarium or by touring the ship used by Robert Byrd in his Antarctic adventures. The Ford Building, Goodyear Landing Field, and Havoline exhibits showcased highlights from the transportation industry. There are also cultural elements like the Hall of Religion and a replica of the Pantheon.

Nineteen nations officially participated at the fair, and several international buildings are labeled. Visitors to the fair could walk through an Old English Village, Mayan temples, and the streets of Shanghai. And they did in droves – nearly 50 million people ultimately attended. The immense popularity led the organizers to extend it a second year to 1934.
