Description
Displaying the iconic cartographic style of the well-known pictorial artist Ruth Taylor White, this folding souvenir map is one of her scarcer works. It was published in Los Angeles in 1929 by the Western Air Express in celebration of their third anniversary operating in Southern California.
The image is focused on the region between San Diego and Santa Barbara and notes the routes taken by Western Express planes, including the air travel time. Charming vignettes highlight local industry, history, geography and recreational opportunities; with numerous oil derricks scattered throughout.
A large Ford Tri-Motor, nicknamed the ‘Tin Goose’ and the workhouse of the Western Express fleet, can be seen flying high above the card; which features pre-printed text on the verso encouraging tourism to Southern California. “You are now but a day or so from California – you can fly out and have almost your entire vacation to spend by the Pacific.” Includes the original mailing envelope.
