A Caricature Map of South Carolina

A cartographic extravaganza capturing South Carolina in all its glory.

This caricature map of South Carolina claims in the title cartouche to be “A humerus, hand-drawed polyglot of sum places, things and events of contimporary and histerical intrist” and implores the audience to “pleese excuyuze or overlook misteaks.”

The light-hearted tone carries across the rest of the image, which is filled with dozens of comical vignettes, cartoonish puns, and visual plays on words. Illustrated figures are shown in a variety of amusing situations, such as golfers competing for space with buccaneers on Hilton Head Island.

Though the content may be at times self-deprecating, it was actually a labor of love created by South Carolina resident Jak Smyrl in 1969. This is one of at least three maps designed by Smyrl, all of areas across the state and in the same distinctive caricature style.
