Description

“This book has been prepared to help keep alive our memories of the days when we lived together from Camp Campbell to Gotha. Years from now when even the experiences of combat begin to fade in detail, it’s the lighter, perhaps sometimes amusing incidents that will bring back memories with all their associations of the 70st as we knew it and liked it best.” – Introduction

This spectacular commemorative volume and folding map were published in 1945 to honor the members of the 701st Tank Battalion. The unit’s efforts to dismantle the Nazi regime in Europe are detailed in full, with a chronology of events, humorous cartoons, photographs, a battalion roster, list of awards, and more.

A fold-out map highlights the route across the European Theater, from training in England all the way to the banks of the Elbe, 50 miles from Berlin! Simple vignettes show the troop ship R.M.S. Mauretania and arrival at the beaches of Normandy on D-Day+79. The entire path, from embarkation in Liverpool to V-E Day in Gotha, measures approximately 1,689 miles.

The unit map was designed by William Ciringione, with the foldout published by the ‘internationally known Justus Perthes map firm’. Printing and binding of the book was done by the firm of Sebaldus-Verlag in Nuremberg in 1945.
