Description
This interesting map seems to emphasize the mountainous topography of Germany, France, and Austria, rather than the deadly conflict that it depicts. Simple colored lines and dated text boxes identify the route and HQ locations of the 66th Infantry Regiment, assigned to the 71st Infantry Division during its march across the European Theater. The bottom of the sheet includes a list of the attached and supporting units, map key, brief campaign history, and a dedication from the commanding officer, Colonel A.J. Regnier. A brief excerpt follows;
“Soldiers of the 66th Infantry, I present with you this graphic history of the two campaigns…in which this Regiment has so gallantly fought. For you soldiers who took part in these campaigns, in the years to come it will serve to refreshen your memory as you reminisce with your families and friends in the security of your homes. For those soldiers who subsequently join this splendid organization, it will furnish them with an historical background of the great deeds accomplished by the founders of this Regiment in the struggle for World Freedom.”
A succinct description as any that I’ve found for the dozens of commemorative campaign maps made by and for units across all theaters of the Second World War.
