Description

This understated map of the Western Front during World War I highlights the training, movement, combat engagements, and occupational locations of the U.S. 4th Infantry Division. A legend in the lower-left explains in further detail the various symbols used throughout the image, which also identifies geographic features, major towns, and political borders.

The unit played an important role in the St. Mihiel Offensive as part of General John Pershing’s American Expeditionary Force and would remain as an occupying force in Germany until the summer of 1919.
