Description

This vibrant pictorial map is a fascinating commemoration/celebration of the 292nd Engineer Combat Battalion and its experiences in the European Theater of Operation during World War II. An isometric aerial perspective of the continent shows the unit’s path from training and debarkation in England to linking up with the Red Army near Osterburg, Germany.

Numerous illustrated vignettes provide a first-person perspective on the various actions (combat and otherwise) undertaken by the 292nd during the campaign. These include a march across France with the 9th Army, the construction of German POW encampments near Mainz, and crossing the Rhine with the 5th Armored Division. Signs of minefields, bombed-out cities, bridged rivers, and long convoys of trucks are just a few of the everyday sights encountered during the unit’s trek and replicated within the image.

The map was designed by Chris G. Haffenbrack. Printed in Antwerp by De Vos-Van Kleef Ltd. in 1945. As of April 2024, only one entry is noted in WorldCat, at Texas A&M. OCLC# 1369208593.
