27th Division Summary of Operations in the World War

“Commemorating the services of American forces in Europe during the World War. “

This informational volume seeks to permanently enshrine the contribution made by the 27th United States Infantry Division to the Allied victory in Europe during the First World War. It was prepared by the American Battle Monuments Commission and published in Washington, D.C. by the Government Printing Office in 1944, about a year after elements of the division engaged in their first combat of the Second World War.

The book’s 48 pages present a summary of the 27th’s history beginning with its organization from New York National Guard troops at Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina in 1917 and culminating with the Armistice on November 11 the following year. An appendix includes the divisional organization, tables of casualties, and a list of sources.

Also present are the three fold-out maps: 27th Division Somme Offensive September 24 – October 2, 1918 (31.5″ x 21″); 27th Division Somme Offensive October 3-22, 1918 (28″ x 27″); 27th Division Dickebush Lake and Scherpenberg Sector July 25 – August 18 Ypres-Lys Offensive August 19 – September 3, 1918 (26″ x 27.75″).

Each contour map replicates a contemporary battle plan and updates it with bright red lines that highlight divisional movement across time.
