Description
This straightforward unit history map of the European Theater catalogs the World War II campaign of the 260th Engineer Combat Battalion. A (mostly) unbroken red line crosses the English Channel and traverses France, Belgium, and Germany before the fighting route ends in Salzburg on May 11. Particularly impressive is the sprint from Ramboillet to Luneville during the second week of January.
Relevant dates are provided at each point, while scattered annotations provide additional context for various actions and detachments. Insignia of the primary formations – XV Corps, 106th Cavalry Group, Ninth U.S. Army, Seventh U.S. Army, Third U.S. Army – are presented along the top and bottom. Toponyms use an interesting variety of languages for different features, including Dutch, French, and English.
The map is rare and unlisted in WorldCat as of April 2025. This particular example was owned by PFC Albert Seidler. It includes a five-day leave pass for Paris (June 10-15) that notes various items received – rations, perfume, film, notions, etc.
