Description
Comprised of members from the Georgia National Guard and armed with 105mm M101A1 howitzers, the 230th Field Artillery Battalion landed at Omaha Beach on D+3 (June 9). Their movements from training camps in England through victory outside Magdeburg are illustrated on this map of the European Theater; drawn by battalion draughtsman Sgt. Henry Cox and published by Gerold Verlag in Germany in 1945.
The route followed by the unit, which was operating as part of the 30th Infantry Division, is marked with a hashed line while illustrated “call-outs” provide further detail about particular locations. Encounters with SS Panzer Corps, aerial bombardment, defensive emplacements, and V-2 rockets are shown adjacent to celebrations in several French cities. One drawing shows an artilleryman using his howitzer in a bayonet charge, likely referencing the close proximity of the fighting.

Wear, discoloration, and several small tears along the left side of the sheet, likely where previously bound. Scattered streaks of surface soiling and small spots in the upper center. Narrow margins, as issued. About good condition overall.
