Description

This highly distorted view shows a stylized perspective of the area around Bridgeport, California, in northern Mono County near the Nevada border. It’s oriented with south at the top of the sheet and is centered on the small town with a population of less than 1,000. The region is popular for fishing and winter recreation.

Illustrated accents and pictorial topography highlight the mountainous terrain. Tourist amenities like restaurants, sporting goods stores, accommodations, boat landings, and ranger stations are noted throughout. An inset map in the lower left shows the relative area depicted.

The image is surrounded by a border of contemporary advertisements, though a few of the spaces remain blank, indicating that there may have been a lack of sponsors. They again appeal largely to outdoor enthusiasts and promote goods and services like taxidermy, gunsmithing, and cocktail lounges.

Originally issued in 1954 by the Hayden Map Company of Glendale, California. This example has been updated to 1958, according to a text box in the center that recommends ‘Please Make Your Reservations Early.’
