Description

This entertaining woodcut was based on a sketch by the talented Linley Sambourne and originally published in the August 20, 1892 issue of Punch, or the London Charivari. This particular example was issued the following year in a commemorative annual volume.

It shows Christopher Columbus looking wistfully across the waves, with a steamship billowing smoke on the horizon. The caption laments at the possibilities should he have had access to such amazing technology – “What! Go over in five days! Why, if I’d had a ship like that, I’d have discovered everything before now!”
