This interesting aerial perspective highlights the World War I battle lines across Northern Italy in late June/early July 1918. Austria-Hungary’s last desperate attempt to force Italy to the bargaining table had failed – the Second Battle of the Piave River (June 15-23) was an utter disaster. Though there were some short-lived gains, the broad offensive failed to capture any primary objectives and resulted in swift retreat. The map highlights those modest advances, plus the later battle line showing ‘the successful Italian drive now in progress.’
The map was designed by R.G. Russom and Russell J. Walrathy. Published in New York as the centerfold in the July 4, 1918 issue of Mid-Week Pictorial. Other interesting contents include a story on gas attacks, Our Nation’s Roll of Honor, and a small map showing proposed air routes across the Atlantic Ocean.
