Harbour Improvement on the Pacific Coast of the United States

This fascinating report on the harbors of America’s northern Pacific Coast was authored by William Wright Harts, a Major in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. His findings were published in London in 1911 by the Institution of Civil Engineers, transcribing an address delivered to the society. Harts discusses the peculiar geographic conditions that make harbor improvements difficult, the lack of protected areas along the West Coast, and several lessons that can be applied to other civic works.

The booklet concludes with a large fold-out plate that offers comparative views of three improved harbors – the mouth of the Columbia River, Yaquina Bay, and Humboldt Bay. Each shows a chronological series of maps that capture how littoral drift and sediment accumulation are mediated by the construction of jetties and extensive dredging.
