Description

“Hurtling toward the Sun from an unknown place beyond the planets in our solar system, Halley’s Comet will make a close encounter with Earth in 1986. It will grow from a pinpoint of light to the size of a large star with a glowing tail millions of miles long as it approaches the Sun in January.” – Text, upper center.

This illustrative depiction of the center of our solar system was published in 1985 by Rand McNally to inform eager audiences about the impending appearance of Halley’s Comet. The comet’s orbit, as well as those of Earth and Venus, are shown circling the Sun in blue, green, and orange, respectively. A more ‘scientific’ diagram outlines the various gravitational factors in play.
