This “heavenly” bird’s-eye view offers a comprehensive panoramic survey of the grounds of the Calvary of Pontchâteau, a premier pilgrimage destination in the Loire-Atlantique region of Western France. Originally established in 1709 by Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort (pictured, upper center), the site’s history is one of remarkable resilience; it was built by the manual labor of thousands of peasants, ordered destroyed by the state, and heroically reconstructed in the 19th century.

This finely detailed image acts as a “spiritual map,” identifying nearly forty separate buildings and sculptures scattered across the lush, wooded grounds. The focal point is the massive, man-made hill topped with three crosses, representing the site of the Crucifixion. From this pinnacle, a web of winding paths leads visitors through a physical retelling of the life of Christ, with each station serving as a stop on a planned religious journey. In addition to the spiritual elements, practical tourist features are also included, such as a hotel and administrative offices.
