Description

This quartet of maps was published by the Government Printing Office in 1901 to accompany the official Annual Report of the U.S. War Department. They relate to military operations in the ongoing Philippine–American War, a local insurrection that erupted when the U.S. refused to grant Filipino independence after conquering the territory in the Spanish-American War. The four plates are as follows:

  • Map of Scene of Operations against Insurgents Dec. 16, 1900 to Jan. 8, 1901. – Measuring 25.5″ x 32.25″ and drawn by L. Schloss under the direction of Major J.F. Case. A topographic map of the Cagayan River valley that highlights the routes of American patrols against rebel forces. Gun positions, battle sites, prominent geographic features, and settlements are labeled.
  • Reconnaissances…in Northern Mindanao, January 15 to February 2, 1901 – Anonymously attributed and measures 8.25″ x 16.25″, with an image that notes the routes of four reconnaissance parties through coastal farmland north of Tagoloan.
  • Route of Expedition under Command of Lieut. Col. T.J. Wint. 6th U.S. Cav. Dec. 28, 1900 – Jan. 1, 1901 – A long strip map measuring 36.5″ x 8.9″ that shows the route of the 3-day expedition between Tung-Chow and Hsi-Chig.
  • San Martin, Mindanao, P.I – Measuring 8.75″ x 16.75″ and drawn by Lieut. J.C. Wilson of the 28th Infantry, United States Volunteers. A basic street map is overlaid with a detailed census of the village’s inhabitants.

Condition Description: Group of four folding maps extracted from a government report (unfortunately lost). Sharp creasing along folds, light toning, and a somewhat ragged margin where previously bound. Good to very good condition overall.
