Studying in Germany

“Germany…welcomes those who come from abroad in search of the scientific achievements which are her contribution to the future.” – Introduction.

This lovely illustrated map highlighting Germany’s venerable system of higher education was drawn by Himke Feber and published in 1951 as part of a promotional brochure. Major cities across Western Germany are represented by elegant buildings, iconic portraits (i.e. Beethoven), or symbols of industry. Various educational facilities within each place are shown using a series of small symbols. Eastern Germany, absent the colorful vignettes, is limited to a handful of institutions and no ‘full’ university (with divinity faculty). The accompanying booklet includes descriptive text and photographs covering many of the places depicted.

The text was authored by Dr. Wienert, with overall artwork by Himke Fabel. Printed in Frankfurt am Main by K.G. Lohse and published in 1951 by the German Central Tourist Association, with significant financial assistance by the German-American Trade Promotion Company. According to the back page, this non-profit was “formed by leading associations of industry, commerce, exporters, handicrafts, and tourism, for the purpose of advising the American businessman interested in doing business with Germany.”
