Description
This is a 1953 edition of the popular “Roads to Romance” map of Southern California, issued in at least eleven different variants between 1946 and 1965. The image, drawn by Claude Putnam, covers the area along the Pacific coast from Malibu to Ensenada and as far east as the Mojave Desert and Lake Havasu. This example was issued by the short-lived Roads to Romance Association, Inc. and omits the decorative border for a cleaner cartographic composition.
The colorful image skillfully illustrates the regions’ varied landscape – rugged mountains, barren deserts, rocky beaches, and fertile valleys. The pre-Interstate road network is emphasized, along with historic trails and explorers’ routes. Scattered vignettes capture the mix of Wild West, Spanish Rancho, and modern Hollywood allure that made Southern California a wildly popular tourist destination in the postwar years.
The theme of outdoor recreation – fishing, surfing, hiking, etc. – is also heavily emphasized. On the verso is a ‘Road Map to the Roads of Romance’ and numerous panels of text and photographs that describe the region’s abundant charms and attractions.
