Description
This beautiful depiction of the sweet-smelling mint plant was engraved by Mathias Merian on behalf of Prince Ludwig of Anhalt. A tall stalk grows in the foreground of an idyllic countryside scene, a small pile collected in the lower right, probably for use in a tea.
Ludwig, Prince of Anhalt, authored a four-volume botanical publication with 400 plates, each depicting a different flower, shrub, or tree and dedicated to a member of the sponsoring society (founded in 1617). Second edition, published in Frankfurt am Main in 1646. Merian was best known for his cartographic work – these are the only botanicals actually done by his hand.
