Description

This engaging Civil War map provides a military overview of the 1862 Battle of Shiloh, which took place near Pittsburg Landing in Tennessee. The image, oriented with north to the left, is bordered approximately by the Tennessee River, Owl Creek, and Lick Creek – all reflecting the strategic importance of water features to 19th-century warfare. The rugged terrain is shown with hachured relief and thick forests, bisected by a few roads and wagon trails. Four different colors annotate the position of Union forces on the morning and evening of April 6th and 7th. Rebel units ‘generally parallel’ those U.S. units shown, according to a note in the upper right.

Through these chronological troop movements, the audience can better understand the Confederate advances on Day 1, followed by Grant’s overnight reinforcements at Pittsburg Landing and surprise counterattack. Though victorious, the Union Army suffered higher losses than their opponents – there were nearly 24,000 casualties combined, making the Battle of Shiloh one of the bloodiest days of the Civil War.

The map was drawn by U.S. Army Engineer Otto H. Matz and published in 1862 by Julius Bien & Company of New York. This is the second edition, the first was issued in St. Louis by Charles Robyn & Co.
