This beautiful antique map presents a large area around the ancient French city of Le Mans. Known variously as the Duchy of Cenomannie, the County of Maine, and the Province of Maine, the area is now divided into the departments of Sarthe and Mayenne. The fortified regional capital is shown prominently in the center of the image, with some detail on streets and local landmarks offered within the walls.

Numerous vineyards, represented with small vines, dot the surrounding landscape, which is also reflected through pictorial hills and trees. Toponyms identify a fascinating variety of villages, estates, and religious institutions, with over fifty abbeys and priories noted in the table and explanatory text in the upper right. Though the original cartographer is credited as Mathieu Ogier in the decorative title cartouche, the map was published in Amsterdam around 1640 by the Blaeu family.
