Description
Scandia Restaurant in Hollywood, California sought to recreate the charm and cuisine of Scandanavia in sunny Southern California. It was a popular hangout for members of the entertainment industry and allegedly the birthplace of the Noble Vikings of Orange County.
This Scandia menu was drawn by Hakon Michele in 1953 and presents an amusing pictorial map linking the ‘Old World’ to the New. Caricatured figures (many wearing VIking hats) work on exporting the finest Scandanavian products – cheese, ham, aquavit, sardines, and meatballs, just to name a few. Laden longships cross the Atlantic, feeding an eager American audience. The bill of fare, printed on the verso, features many of these tasty morsels and includes numerous handwritten specials.
