U.S.S. Quincy The Sea Wolf Victory Souvenir

The ‘Victory Edition’ of the Sea Wolf – the official publication of the U.S.S. Quincy.

“The staff of the Sea Wolf believes that every man aboard the mighty “Q” would like to have a permanent record of the history making events of the past few weeks…It is not our intent to place a restraint upon your yarn spinning ability but rather to provide a source and reference work which may be used as a basis for personal embellishments.” – Introduction.

This scarce and ephemeral packet was published in early October 1945 aboard the U.S.S. Quincy. The Baltimore-class heavy cruiser was launched in 1943 and had an impressive service history that included ground support in Normandy, convoy operations in the Pacific, and important diplomatic work in the Suez Canal. The Sea Wolf, the official publication of the “Q”, was issued aboard ship to commemorate the ongoing action.

Vol. 1 No. 5, the Special Victory Edition, starts a brief narrative in early July 1945 and quotes extensively from headquarters dispatches “for the sake of brevity and authoritativeness.” Of particular interest are two dreary illustrations by J.B. Nilsson that show the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These images contrast sharply with the cover art by Dana Morin.
