Description
This British military map covers a large area around the Belgian port city of Antwerp. Issued at a scale of 1:250,000, the image offers a strategic overview of the region along the River Scheldt; including the cities of Rotterdam, Utrecht, and the Hague. International borders are highlighted in red. Topography is shown in contours and various settlements and geographic features are labeled. The transportation network of roads, railroads, and canals is also emphasized.
Second Edition. Compiled by the Geographical Section, General Staff and published by the War Office in 1942. Red overprinting indicates it likely was intended for use by the RAF, circling key Luftwaffe sites. Antwerp and its important harbor facilities were occupied by German forces in May 1940. The introduction of forced labor, the yellow patch, and several deportation raids were inflicted on Jewish residents beginning in 1942.
